COUNCILLOR SLAMS NEW ROAD NAMES
A DECISION to change the name of two major roads in Harlow has come under fire from Tory councillor Linda Atkins, who claims they are being re-named after "Marxist" figures. Under the changes, First Avenue-Mandela Avenue immortalises South African Nelson Mandela, currently in prison for his anti-apartheid protests, while Fifth Avenue-Allende Avenue is named after the Chilean martyr Salvador Allende. But other councillors are in favour. Mervyn Juliff said: "We have a road called Elizabeth Way and I don't believe she is a member of the Labour Party."

MISERY IN A HOUSE OF BUGS
A 52-YEAR-OLD man has slammed Harlow Council for renting him a house which he claims is infested with bugs and woodworm. Unemployed Horace Green has asked for his family to be re-housed from their home in Churchfield but the council say there is no suitable property available.

ALBERT'S CHAIR EASES WAY
ALBERT Hooker (66) of Northbrooks has invented a new type of invalid chair which he says has had a "fantastic" response from local disabled people. Now he is hoping to interest a firm in mass-producing the lightweight 18lb folding chair.
